Turning Research Challenges into Action: iRISE Workshop Encourages Innovative Thinking Among Researchers in Darbhanga, Bihar

The iRISE Early Career Researcher Development Strand conducted a three-day Capacity Building Workshop at Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), Darbhanga, Bihar, from 29–31 January 2026. The programme engaged 88 early-career researchers—36 female and 52 male participants—from diverse academic disciplines. Designed around practical professional development, the workshop connected science communication, design thinking, innovation, and effective science teaching.

The workshop began with an inaugural session attended by Prof. Harekrishna Singh, Director of Distance Education, LNMU; Prof. Afaque Hashmi, Head, Department of Education, and local coordinator; Dr. Manawa Diwekar-Joshi, Senior Technical Officer, iRISE-IISER Pune; Mohammad Taquee, Technical Officer, iRISE-IISER Pune; and Ms. Anita Nagarajan, Resource Person.

Communication took centre stage on the opening day. Ms. Anita Nagarajan used Lego-based activities, visual prompts, and the P.R.E.S.E.N.T. framework to help participants understand how communication can be adapted for different audiences. Groups subsequently developed presentations, leading into the “Walk the Talk” exercise on the second day.

The workshop then moved from communication to design thinking and innovation. Dr. Milind Choudhari introduced participants to the distinction between complicated and complex problems and demonstrated how design thinking can support problem-solving. Participants applied the methodology to challenges in education, working collaboratively to develop possible solutions.

On the final day, Dr. Manawa Diwekar-Joshi focused on pedagogy, introducing inquiry-based learning, the three domains of learning, and constructive alignment in the context of NEP 2020. Participants put the concepts into practice by developing concept-map-based lesson plans incorporating measurable outcomes, assessments, and learning activities. Peer assessment added another layer of reflection and collaborative learning.

The workshop concluded with reflections from participants and a valedictory session featuring dignitaries from LNMU. The programme also marked the participants’ entry into the iRISE-ECR community, with continued access to learning resources and a pathway towards eligibility for the 10-day Level 2 Capacity Building Workshop at IISER Pune.
